How to adjust your car headlights at home
Most drivers will hardly admit to themselves when they last adjusted their car's headlights. Many of them have never done it themselves. Correct headlight adjustment, however, has a direct impact on traffic safety. Therefore, you need to adjust them periodically. Read our article on how to adjust the headlights yourself and what you should pay special attention to when doing it.

When is it necessary to adjust the headlights?
Here is a list of the main reasons why headlights do not adjust properly.
- Changing the light bulb. Quite a common reason. Most drivers won't be looking for an original bulb that perfectly matches the replacement. Different brands of products may emit slightly different light. Variations are therefore possible.
- Consequences of an accident or impact. Adjustment may be disturbed due to mechanical stress. Even a slight tilt can critically affect the direction of the light beam.
- Natural wear and tear. In the process of operation, headlights and lights are subjected to vibrations, temperature fluctuations, mechanical and chemical effects. All this can affect their correct arrangement.
- Adjustment defects, suspension repairs, stiffness changes, changing tires or rims (especially when changing the diameter).

In all these situations, the probability of correct settings being broken is high. For this reason, in the above cases you should adjust (or at least check) your headlights yourself.
It is recommended to do it before a long trip. And definitely – if oncoming drivers warn you with flashing lights. And also – if you yourself think that the road is not sufficiently or evenly lit.
How do we check and adjust our headlights?
When you change light bulb, it's best to immediately check that your headlights are symmetrically aligned. You can do it yourself and very quickly. To do it, you need to approach some vertical surface (wall, garage door) in the dark. Then turn on the dipped beam and look at the shape of the light beams.

If both light beams are at the same height, most likely no adjustment is necessary. If you still notice a difference, you can fix the defect yourself. First, check that the replaced bulb is correctly inserted. If everything is fine, you need to adjust the direction of the light using a special screw. By turning it, you can raise or lower the light beam.
This will only help if the second headlight is properly adjusted. Otherwise you will have to adjust the lighting more carefully.
The high beam can also be checked in the same way and if necessary you can adjust it yourself.

To detect significant differences in settings, you can ask a person of average height to stand about 5 meters from the car. If the headlights are adjusted correctly, the light beam will be approximately at knee height. This is, of course, a very rough estimate. But if the deviations are really serious, you will see this immediately.
How to adjust dipped beam - fine tuning
To regulate yourself low beam, you need to find an absolutely flat area with a vertical surface nearby. First, get as close to a wall as possible. Next, three main markings should be made on the surface. Two of them will correspond to the centers of each headlight, and the third to the center of symmetry of the car.
A vertical line must be drawn through each point, and a horizontal line between the two outermost points. Another line should be pushed a little lower (in our example it is 5 cm, but in specific situations this value may vary).

Then move 5 meters away from the wall and look towards the projection of the lighthouse. It shows the deviation of the beam relative to the road in percent. It is usually 1 %, but can have other values.

1% deviation at a distance of 5 meters - this is exactly the 5 cm that we have deviated from the first line to draw the bottom line. On this second line, the bright and shadow border of the beam should be outlined. If there are deviations, you need to use the adjustment screw yourself and adjust the position of the lamps correctly.
A laser construction level can be used to mark the lines more accurately. There are also a few additional points to consider.
- The car tank must be fully filled with fuel.
- All tire pressures are correct.
- Do not place heavy objects in the trunk.
- The manual headlight corrector on the instrument panel is set to "0".
- There should be a load of about 70 kg (corresponding to the weight of the driver) in the passenger compartment.
During the measurement, another person can sit in the driver's seat instead of the load. You can also drive the car yourself, but then it will be difficult to adjust the headlights yourself. You will need to enlist the help of a friend.

During adjustment, the two headlights close one after the other. Then adjust the beam so that its center is on the corresponding vertical line. The lower horizontal line will be the upper limit of the light. Oblique sections should start from the intersections of this line and the lateral vertical lines.
Some specific values should be taken from the vehicle's operating instructions (handbook).

If a headlamp with a combination of low and high beam is used, it is not necessary to adjust the high beam separately.
High beam adjustment
To adjust the headlights for high beams, it is easier to use the same self-made stand.

First mark the centers of each light and draw two straight lines vertically. Then the setting should be checked. The light beam must run almost parallel to the road surface. The center of each beam is at the intersection of the corresponding vertical lines with the upper horizontal line.
How to adjust headlights with LED bulbs installed
To the regulation of LED headlights should be approached with special responsibility, since they shine with significantly greater power. Therefore, if adjusted incorrectly, they dazzle oncoming traffic, which is dangerous for traffic safety.
In general, the requirements for adjusting LED headlights are similar to those described above. Therefore, in many cases, you can set them up yourself in almost the same way, using the provided schemes and algorithms. However, there are also differences.
First you need to make sure the bulb is oriented vertically along the plane of the LEDs. Some LED lamps have a rotating base for fine adjustment. If the shape of the light spot is not aligned, you should rotate the lamp around its axis within 20-30 degrees until you get the best result.
In headlights with a factory magnifier, the boundary between light and shadow does not change when the LED car lamps are installed. In the case of a headlight with reflector optics (headlights without magnifiers), the light beam can be slightly raised relative to the halogen bulb.
Due to the increased brightness of the LED bulbs, in addition to the usual settings, it is recommended to bring the headlight into a suitable condition:
- To remove the leaks,
- to clean the reflector,
- to polish the glass that has clouded over time.
The need for these operations depends on the condition of the car's headlights.
